Versions and support lifecycle
Odoo runs two release tracks at once, and the difference between them determines whether you can ever move off Odoo Online. Worth understanding before you choose a starting version.
Two release tracks
Major versions such as 17.0, 18.0, and 19.0 ship roughly once a year and run on all three hosting options: Odoo Online, Odoo.sh, and on-premise. Each gets three years of standard support.
SaaS intermediate versions such as 19.1, 19.2, and 19.3 ship every two to three months. Odoo’s documentation is explicit that these are available only on Odoo Online and are not eligible for extended support.
Why this matters at the start of a project
A database on a SaaS intermediate version is on Odoo Online and has never had an Odoo.sh or on-premise build. If self-hosting, a private deployment, or data residency might become a requirement later, that decision is easier to keep open by starting on a major release.
Canadian organizations with public-sector customers or data residency clauses in their own contracts should treat this as a first-week question rather than a year-two surprise.

A note on this table's freshness
This reproduces the support table as published in the Odoo documentation source at the version noted in the sidebar. The local documentation corpus also carries a 19.4 branch that this published table does not yet list, which is normal: the branch appears before the support table is updated. Check the live documentation before relying on a date for a contract.
Upgrading between versions
Odoo states that you can upgrade from any version to supported versions only, and that the last unsupported version remains usable as an upgrade target for up to six months after its end-of-life date.
The practical reading: a database left on an old version does not simply stay still. The set of versions it can move to keeps shrinking, and the eventual jump gets larger and more expensive the longer it waits. Any customization written against the old version has to be revalidated at each step.

Common questions
How long is an Odoo version supported?
Odoo provides standard support for every major version for three years, covering helpdesk support, bug fixing, and security updates. Beyond three years, extended support is available for a mandatory additional fee and covers helpdesk support and bug fixes depending on feasibility.
What is the difference between Odoo 19.0 and Odoo SaaS 19.1?
Odoo 19.0 is a major release available on Odoo Online, Odoo.sh, and on-premise. SaaS 19.1, 19.2 and 19.3 are intermediate releases published every two to three months and available only on Odoo Online. They are not eligible for extended support and never ship for Odoo.sh or on-premise.
Which Odoo version should a new Canadian implementation start on?
Odoo 19.0 is the current major release. It was published in September 2025, runs on all three hosting options, and its planned end of standard support is September 2028. Starting a new implementation on a major release rather than a SaaS intermediate keeps self-hosting and Odoo.sh open as future options.
